Andrea Kreidenweiss (Priv.-Doz. Dr. rer. nat.) is a research group leader at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, University Hospital Tübingen. Since 2010, she has been dedicated to translational research to combat poverty-associated infectious diseases such as malaria and schistosomiasis. Her expertise includes the development of diagnostics, drugs and vaccines as well as clinical trials and epidemiological studies. She has also been a scientist at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) since 2018 and has a long-standing collaboration with the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) in Gabon.

Her research projects are funded by the BMBF, the EU and other third-party funding bodies and often take place in Africa. Andrea Kreidenweiss leads several projects on the clinical development of improved malaria vaccine candidates, including MIMVAC-Africa, an initiative involving several African countries. Her work in the field of diagnostics includes research into “rapid test-resistant” malaria parasites, the spread of which is increasing in East Africa. Another important project is freeBILy, which aims to develop reliable diagnostic tests to eliminate schistosomiasis in children and mothers in the affected countries.

Another focus is the training of specialists. As head of a mentoring program, she is actively involved in the WISE program, which supports women in Africa in their scientific training. Her projects have the long-term goal of improving the health of the African population and at the same time make an important contribution to training and the development of local expertise.
