Fossil Hunting in the Desert

“Most of what we know about dinosaurs comes from discoveries in North America and Europe,” says paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim. “But there’s a huge gap in our knowledge, and it concerns the second-largest landmass on our planet—Africa.”

During several scientific expeditions to the Sahara, Ibrahim has uncovered not only some of the most puzzling dinosaur fossils but also traces of unique ecosystems and new remains of snakes, turtles, and pterosaurs. One of the key goals of this young German-Moroccan scientist is to inspire people in Africa and around the world to appreciate their fossil heritage and preserve it for scientific research.

Using fossils and other artifacts, Dr. Ibrahim will share stories from his expeditions and demonstrate how dinosaur research is conducted today—an adventure for the whole family.
