Does Human Activity Cause Earthquakes?

Earthquakes can pose a significant threat to human lives—such as the catastrophic quake in eastern Turkey and northern Syria in 2023, which claimed around 60,000 lives, destroyed nearly 39,000 buildings, and affected hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom are still suffering today. This earthquake was caused by the friction between tectonic plates, where energy builds up and is suddenly released. However, not all earthquakes are purely natural phenomena; human activities can also trigger them. How are earthquakes, the energy transition, and climate change interconnected from a geophysical perspective? Geophysicist Marco Bohnhoff from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) Potsdam will explain this in a live recording of the Hörsaal podcast by Deutschlandfunk Nova.
