Sergei Loznitsa was born on 5 September 1964, grew up in Kiev (Ukraine) and graduated in applied mathematics from Kiev Polytechnic in 1987. From 1987 to 1991, Sergei Loznitsa worked as a researcher at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics, where he specialised in artificial intelligence research. In 1997 he graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, where he studied feature film directing. Loznitsa has been making films since 1996 and has now directed 25 award-winning documentaries and 4 feature films.
Loznitsa's feature debut "MY JOY" (2010) premiered in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival, followed by the feature "IN THE FOG" (2012), which won the FIPRESCI award at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, Sergei Loznitsa presented his third feature film "A GENTLE CREATURE", also in competition at Cannes, where he received the Best Director Award in the "Un Certain Regard" section for his fourth feature film "DONBASS" in 2018.
In 2013, Sergei Loznitsa founded the film production company ATOMS & VOID.
