Hans Block is a documentary film and theater director, author and musician. He was born in 1985 in Berlin. He studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" Berlin since 2010. His debut film "The Cleaners" about the shadow industry of digital censorship in Manila which he made together with Moritz Riesewieck, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and has since been screened at more than 70 international film festivals and in cinemas and on television worldwide. It was nominated for an Emmy and the German Television Award and received numerous international awards, including the Prix Europa for Best European TV Documentary in 2018 and the Grimme Audience Award in 2019. Their TED Talk „The price for a „free“ internet“ on freedom of expression online reached an audience of millions. In 2020, their essay "The Digital Soul" was published by Goldmann Verlag.
Hans Block is part of the group Laokoon. In their work, they combine investigative research with various forms of artistic expression. This results in essays, documentaries, theater productions, lectures and radio plays on highly explosive topics, always centering on the question of how our idea of man and society is changing in the digital age.
