I spy with my little eye @ Markt und im Kaufhaus
Welcome to our festival centre, the department stores' on Halle's market square. A house with history and tradition in a prominent location. Established as Kaufhaus Huth in 1928, it once belonged, like other department stores in Halle, to a Jewish merchant family. For ten years it fell victim to the Nazi boycott of Jewish shops and the subsequent "Aryanisation". It went to an entrepreneur - the Hermann company.
At the time of the GDR planned economy, it became a so-called textile and children's department stores'. After reunification, a large retail chain took over the building, demolished it, rebuilt it and expanded it. After the insolvency of the Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof Group, it stood empty - and now the SILBERSALZ Festival is moving in and resurrecting it as a work of art on four floors from 25th - 29th October 2023. From our centre, our guests can also easily reach the other venues such as the Leopoldina, the Planetarium, the Puschkino, the Moritzburg or the Georg Friedrich Händel Hall on foot. In addition to the department stores', we will also turn the market square with the Marktkirche into an art and event space for the architectural video projection by Filip Roca (Barcelona), a visual and new media artist of worldwide acclaim.
Programme on the floors of the department stores' and the market square:
Kaufhaus EG
This is where the festival opening will take place on 25.10.23, from 18:00. The "Burgshop" of the "Giebichenstein" art academy and a festival coffee have their place here, as do our talks of the "Komm setz dich" formats. The "Good Genes Performance & Cocktails" and the programme of "Science on Stage - Wissenschaft auf die Bühne", with the science market, can be visited here and on Sunday, 29.10.2023, we invite you to a delicious pollinator breakfast. For the little festival fans among you, we will be showing animated and short films in our Short Film Club, for children aged 5 and 8 and have some unusual video games ready.
Kaufhaus 1st floor
Here you can experience fantastic exhibitions that take you to the depths of the oceans or the smallest particles of cell structures, making the invisible visible.
Kaufhaus 2nd floor
We present: the pop-up cinema. On 25.10.23 you can see the opening film Breaking Social, followed by a film discussion with the director Frederik Gertten. But you can also enjoy other documentaries, including previews and German premieres, such as "Mythos Jungfrau" or selected competition entries for the Science and Media Awards 2023 ("The Ocean - Oasis of Life") and the festival closing film: And the King Said..., and discuss them in the subsequent talks.
Kaufhaus UG
Our music club in the basement of the festival centre is the place where science and music meet. DJ live sets by Dominik Eulberg, Stimming and Bertolt Meyer will fascinate you just as much as the Science Notes under the title: Invisible. A very special highlight will be the English artist Kat Austen and her performance "The Matter of the Soul".
Market Church
On the Marktplatz Halle we invite you to PULSE, by the artist Filip Roca, from 25.10.23 daily from 18:30 - 24:00. This projection mapping will bring the Marktkirche to life. The artwork is a world premiere and was created as a tribute to our motto "I see what you don't see...", exclusively for the 6th SILBERSALZ Science and Media Festival.
